About

Modern Planet is an independent-minded publication about material culture and design: the stuff people make, the places they shape, and the choices that stay with an object long after it leaves the workbench. It is for curious readers who like to look twice at familiar things.

What we look at

Our subjects range from material properties and making methods to objects in use, repair, and shared spaces. We follow a question rather than a trend: what does this thing ask of its maker, owner, or surroundings? A loose joint, a surface that wears unevenly, or a bench that nobody uses can all open a useful line of inquiry.

How we approach it

We explain ideas in plain language and keep claims in proportion to what is known. Articles can compare trade-offs, describe a process, or unpack a design choice without pretending one answer suits every situation. When a detail is uncertain or depends on context, we say so. We welcome readers who are makers, fixers, designers, or simply attentive to the objects around them.

Room for the imperfect

Not every repair works, and not every clever design works for everyone. We take setbacks seriously because they often reveal the limits of a method or material. The aim is not to declare a winner, but to leave readers better able to notice, question, and decide.
